On a few 45 maps notably Berlin and Rhur the Blue side has numerous fighter options including the Fw 190 D9 45. This aircraft resulted in a modification to the Fw 190 D9 44 so that its Jumo 213 engine could run on lower quality B4 fuel (87 Octane equivalent?) The D9 45 features a MW 50 boost system which makes the aircraft similar in performance below 3000m when compared with the D9 44.

As with many German fighters the later the model the poorer the performance is. The D9 45, like all MW 50 equipped aircraft, can only use its boost at 100% and above. This means that its boost equipment is dead weight for most of the time, incidentally the D9 45 suffers in turn, climb and altitude performance when compared to the D9 44. The reason that the D9 44 is superior is that it uses C3 fuel (roughly 100 -130 Octane) and achieves the same kind of engine performance but without having to use a MW 50 boost and its associated weight penalties. So it obtains a performance enhancment with WEP engaged across the throttle range It also has sparkling performance at height, something which the D9 45 lacks. Now on these late war 45 maps we have several aircraft which fly using the C3 fuel which supposedly should be in very short supply ie the Bf 109 K4 C3, the Fw 190 A9 and the Fw 190 F8. Often all operating from the same base as the Fw 190 D9 45.

Can the Fw 190 D9 44 be introduced in small numbers on these maps to reflect the fact that there undoubtedly would have been some 44 models kicking around in 1945 which would not have been new production adapted to use B4 fuel models and would still presumably be ran on C3 fuel. The reason for this would be if a station was operating C3fuel aircraft like the K4 or the A9 it would be able to operate D9 44s also and introducing this plane at a time when the Allies have comparably excellent fighters to choose from makes it more of an even balance.

Infact if it thought about logically with a map balance 'hat' on it would be better to feature the 45 model on 44 maps and the 44 model on 45 maps :p such is the relative performance disparity. Often we have early 44 Allied aircraft like the Spitfire IXe, Tempest and P51 D fighting the overboosted D9 44 and in 1945 we have the overboosted Allied fighters like the Mustang III and Spitfire IX 25lb fighting against the D9 45 which represents a retrograde step in performance similar to the 109 G2 / 109 G6 relationship.

Its not a huge issue, however it is one which affects the fun and balance on late war maps - once the Jets run out the numbers are always slanted towards Red team. If at all possible I avoid flying 45 German piston engined fighter aircraft because they are overwhelmed by Allied types.

So, when looking at the sort of fuel in the two different Kurfürsts the ordinary K-4 uses the B4 fuel and the K-4-C3 logically uses the C3 fuel? Or do both use the same sort of fuel? I ask this because the K-4-C3 is e.g. 10 kph faster at 100% throttle WITHOUT MW50 enabled. It also climbs better and has a faster acceleretion, regarding at IL2compare 4.07m.

This has prompted me to post a new thread q.v.

B4 was your average 87/96 octane avgas, which benefited from anti-knocking effects of additives like MW50.
C3 was 100/130 octane avgas and it naturally had a higher detonation point and the gain from additives like MW50 was smaller.

Now I understand, thanks!

Rather slyly I tweaked some of these maps about a month ago so as the 44 version is present. Mostly this isn't something that comes up because there are Jets available for blues and these skew things a little.
