I know I should be getting on with the Borneo map but I had one of those random Google moments and came up with this.

Both the RAF and the Iraqi airforce had Gloster Gladiators.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e320/matthill999/IraqiGladiator.jpg

RAF had the Hawker Audax:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e320/matthill999/REFAudax.jpg

RIAF had the export version of the Audax with the radial engine, the Nisr:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e320/matthill999/REFNisr.jpg

Both the Audax and Nisr can be represented by the U2-VS. I couldn't find any skins for it, but I hacked up one for the Nisr from an Imme winter skin. It's pretty poor cos I'm rubbish at skinning (never tried it before), so if anyone else wants do do a better job feel free. And while you're at it have a go at the Audax.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e320/matthill999/IraqiNisr.jpg

So basically I would suggest J8A's and U2-VS's for both sides. A nice simple cr@p planes map, clear blue skies, short flying distances, Pims o'clock, dogfight-tastic.

Yup, bf-110Ds and he-111s operated in iraq. I got skins but i'm far too drunk to post screens atm (believe me it happensm even to me)

Also some Breda Ba.65's. I have some R.10 hack skins for them to.

MajorDamage

Yep, I know, I've tracked down all the skins etc as well. Potentially it could have: Gladiator, Tomahawk IIB, Hurricane, Audax, Blenheim vs Gladiator, CR42, Nisr, R 10 (Breda Ba65), Bf110C, He111.

But I think it'd be a lot more fun as a simple biplane map. We don't really have anything like this in the cycle. If we add 110's/Hurris/Tomahawks/He111's then the biplanes become immediately useless, and I don't think the available planes would make for a good balanced map anyway. There was a wide variety of weird antiquated biplane types in the Middle East (which we don't have and can't substitute), so for me it feels better to keep it biplane only.

Do we have Iraqi markings in game?

Do we have Iraqi markings in game?

Ummm... no. It would have to be Red=RAF, Blue=no markings or suitable skins.

Well the R.10 is very slow and un uber. It also carries a few bombs.

Exactly my type of plane: I'm expected to get shot down, so it doesn't matter if I am. If I get anyone, it makes me more uber than Superman.

Well the R.10 is very slow and un uber. It also carries a few bombs.

Not nearly as slow and un uber as the U2 though. The U2 does about 110km/h with it's bombs and even then tends to overheat. It is the very worst plane in this game - it makes the P11 look like a dream machine.

If I put the R10 on the map what should I balance it with on the red side? If we add the Blenheim people will complain it's unfair. TBH I don't think the R10 makes a particularly good Ba65 anyway - the wings look wrong and that hacked skin isn't particularly nice.

I'll have a think about it though - if everyone would rather have 110's, He111's, Ba65, Blenheim etc added then it'll have to be on a different map with more airbases. I still think it'll be better just to have J8's and U2's on both sides - then no one can complain it's unfair!

Flipping heck I give up the ghost on this one, good work MajorD.

How are we for skins? Did you find a source?
I know you said you had maybe made some basic ones are these from the screenies. If so how could we make them accessible, there is an option to sort out an FtP link if we could do a skin pack.

I managed to find skins for everything except the Iraqi Nisr (U2) which is the one I hacked up myself. I might stick an appeal in the main IL2 forum to our skinners to make a decent one.

We could host the entire skinpack I suppose, but I'd have to track down all the authors and ask permission.

Here are links to the ones I've found:

RAF Gladiator
Skin by Kristorf (http://www.flying-legends.net/php/downloads/listings.php?cat_id=508) at Flying Legends

RAF Hawker Audax (U-2VS)
vpmedia's MTO Desert skinpack (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=2002) at Mission For Today

Blenheim Mk IV
Loads of desert skins available at Mission For Today and Flying Legends, take your pick.

Iraqi Gladiator

What source material exists in terms of profiles, photos etc for the NIsr (U2) that needs skinning?

I'd be happy to throw some time at this if no one else wants to take it on.

03-07-2007, 22:47
Well it worked really well. I'd be happy to include it as is.
I've upped the number of planes and pilots from the reduced level I'd added, it's 85 planes 80 pilots a side now.
The main dogfight was deeply frantic, targets dangerous but doable after AA was hit.

MajorDamage
04-07-2007, 00:19
Yeah, I have to say I'm really happy with the way this one turned out. I've just been watching the tracks and they're hilarious. Also the stats have a pleasing symmetry about them. I have to admit I was a very bad mapmaker and instead of doing my proper duty and checking < targets etc., as you should do when first testing a map, I just grabbed a biplane along with everyone else and went Dagga Dagga Dagga!!!!

All we need now is for everyone to download the right skins...

Is it possible to put this mission in Uk1 too? :p

Paulie
04-07-2007, 17:50
The following is my nearest interpretation based on what resources I could find. I have had to make some big compromises but I think the overall look is a good one.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q5/PaulBrierley/nisr-9.jpg
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q5/PaulBrierley/nisr-7.jpg
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q5/PaulBrierley/nisr-6.jpg

Biggest compromises:

No fake exhaust pipe
Roundel placement to avoid mechanics
Fake stringer placement in relation to wing edge and gunners position.

MajorDamage
04-07-2007, 17:51
Thanks Barkhorn. Actually it was a fake Hawker Nisr skin for the U-2Vs I was particularly looking for, but don't worry - I think Paulie is working on one. There are already a couple of RIAF Gladiator skins but another one is good to have, especially as we can maybe package it with the Nisr and host them as a skinpack.

Firelok is the one with access to hosting I believe???

As regards porting the map to UK1 I would imagine this would be pretty easy to do, but I'm probably not the man to do it cos I know nothing about FBD.

EDIT: Woah Paulie!!! Nice work, that looks great.

Ooh the grubby ones look brill. Barkhorn, if you're reading this, how you getting on with the Glad skin? It would be great to have a unique UKD skinpack for the Iraqi planes - I think Firelok said he might have some space to host them on. Then we could stick the url in the brief

I sadly removed this one from the cycle for now, yesterday evening was one of the sad moments with more than half of the players leaving the full server when this map came up. :(
So I removed it to keep the players.
I'll re-introduce it later when we have more standard maps in the cycle.
