View Full Version : Thoughts about Korean scenarios...

We have a fair amount of flyables that nearly fit the Korean era, I suppose the last major conflict using a lot of prop planes (especially early stages)

We have lots of late war Corsair types and the P51 Ds, late war Spits/Seafire (isn't one of the IJA planes an OK stand-in for Seafuries?) YP80s too.

On t'other side IL10s, late Yak9s,La7s (maybe MiG9 I-300)

A certain amount of curiosity I suppose to seeing how late-war west compares to late-war east.If it was kept to just props would this strongly favour the Soviet aircraft? and if so the YP80 could show for the UN forces? In terms of Jet vs Jet the USAAF were in all sorts of trouble until the later F86 types showed.

Well, we don't have to worry about that for at least a year.

You might want to consider doing away with engine overheat on any Korean War map. these early jets overheat on takeoff.

Blue:
use the TA183 as a MiG15 substitute.
LA7
IL10
some uber late war YaK 9

Red:
YP80
F4U-C
P51D
B29
A20G (as A26 Intruder)

i've got plenty of skins

Tempest as the Sea Fury flying off a carrier please! I experimented with this once - Essex class work well as a 1950's carrier, unfortunately the Illustrious doesn't have a long enough flight deck to get a Tempest off. I know that Nightshifter made a nice Sea Fury skin for the Ki84 but I think we're going to have to bribe/threaten/ask him nicely to reconsider and do one for the Tempest instead. ;)

Also the Ki84 makes a pretty decent Bearcat - there are some excellent skins available for it.

You mean the N1K2-J, but you're right it's one of the closest hacks i've seen.

Do you think the Tempest looks like a Seafury? seems quite different to me.

Googling around the Korean planes this thing cropped up....

Crazy or what?

Finding a suitable mapsite is a bit of a problem TBO, quite mountainous Korea, New Guinea maps is OK but the airbases aren't that useful, Manchuria is awkward for orientation of the coast and airbases too. Not sure if flipping Kuban is the best bet again:wall:

forget the carriers and go for the winter Moscow map.

UN forces have to cover the Marine Corps retreat in the Chosin Resevoir (my uncle is a survivor)

For Example

So Basically the sides would look like this

PRK/PLAAF:
YaK9UT
IL10
LA7-B20x3 (LA9)
TA183 (MiG15)

UN:
A20G (A26)
F4u-C (F4U-5)
P51D20-NA (F51)
N1K2 (F8F)
YP80 (P80/F9F)
Tempest MK V (Sea Fury)

Use Moscow Winter Map
Consider turning off engine overheat on this map

Only one thing really troubles me with this A/C list and it's the Ta183, true it's a swept wing type like the MiG15 but 4 Mk108s and rather good flight performance puts it out of the YP80s league I think. The MiG 9 we have is conventional winged sure but a lot of the rest of the A/C is very similar including the armament.
Whilst browsing around I found this list...

http://www.korean-war.com/AirWar/AircraftType-LossList.html
Where the MiG 9 is mentioned (it was being flown by the Chinese Airforce at the time.Info about direct Chinese involvement is totally sketchy of course.)

What we are aiming at here is lots of low-level fighter bomber actions with some Jets zooming about above for a bit of Character:D

In reality the MiG 15 was head and shoulders above the P80 in the armament dept.

The TA183 isn't that great a plane.....The P80 outclimbs and outturns it. They have the exact same max divespeed (1000kph) just get a look at IL2 compare

You should reconsider:D
