Hi all,
I recently rebuilt my PC and it soon became obvious that something wasn`t quite right.
The cpu idled at 36 the gpu idled at 60 and the whole lot felt extremely warm, case temp in an Arctic Silentium T1 pro was around the 50 mark. A coupla nights ago whilst playing on UK1,the stuttering started, then the screen froze,I took the case side off and was hit by a blast of hot air that would have roasted your granny.
The psu had hit its thermal cut out temp and stopped, everything was warm, the cpu read 48,the gpu 68, the body of the psu was really hot
.So I thought bugger more money required,I bought an Antec 900 gaming case and an OCZ GameXStream 600W psu. The Antec case has 2 front mounted 3 speed 120mm fans which are housed in the 2 x 3 slot hard drive trays, basically you can fit 6 h/disks, the air from the fans is blown over the disks thus cooling them dramatically, the h/disk went from 45-50 down to 32C. At the top of the case there is a 200mm fan mounted, this thing has 3 speeds and really does pull the warm air out of the case, so much so that there is a cool draft across my legs whilst i`m playing.
As well as that the rear mounted 120mm extraction fan is directly opposite the cpu cooler and is also 3 speed. The case is not super flash looking and not as nicely presented as the P180/182/190 but sure does the job,all the fans are lit by blue leds and it looks the business, there is a clear side panel for all the shiny stuff to be viewed.
The Psu also comes with a 120mm extraction fan with blue led, and is powdercoated black. It has 4 x 12v rails and puts out close on 72A from them, the cables are all braided,so there is no mass of messy wires, although they are really long and were a pain to conceal. The psu is more than capable of handling X-fire and SLi combinations, its virtually silent as well. Loads of connectors 8 x sata, 4 x molex, 2 x PCI-e off different rails, you name it its got it.
Overall the cpu now idles at 27C and reaches 34C whilst playing IL2 the gpu at 51C idle and 54C playing IL2 (its an 8800GTS these temps are norm),overall its made hell of a difference, the psu is that lightly loaded that it barely gets warm and the case itself is like a fridge.
I`d recommend both of these products to anyone building a new system which includes the 8800 or another hot card.
The cost in total was £138 incl next day delivery from www.overclockers.co.uk i`ve had a few dealings with these guys and they are pretty good, incl the tech helpline.
