View Full Version : Silent Hunter 4 - Screenies and stuff - 56k Warning

I bought this game a few months ago and was rather peeved to find out that it was a buggy unplayable mess at the time. I decided to put it aside and wait to see if the issues got fixed, and I'm pleased to say that with the recent patch 1.3 they seem to have ironed out the bugs. I've been playing this game with the Trigger Maru mod and it's just superb.

It's been out a while now so you can pick it up pretty cheap now - only 13.50 at the Battlefields Store (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search?index=blended&keywords=silent%20hunter%204&_encoding=UTF8) (at time of writing) for example. Then you need the following:

Patch 1.3 - download links at http://silenthunter4.uk.ubi.com/.

Trigger Maru 1.4 mod and Periscope fix. Links for both here at Subsim (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=115258). You have to register on the forum to get access but it's quick and easy.

You also need the JSGME Generic Mod Enabler (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/products.html)

Make a folder called MODS in your SH4 directory, then unrar the mods into it. Place the JSGME application in your SH4 directory and run it to enable the mods.

I've gone mad taking screenshots. The graphics are just gobsmacking, I've never seen ship models this good in any game before. All the following are straight shots from the game, some brightness/contrast/levels tweakage in Photoshop and some cropping/resizing, otherwise untouched. 1 or 2 are without anti-aliasing - before I realised that you have to set AA for this game at the driver level.

How hard is this game to play? I really want to get in to it, but I'm worried I'll have to spend 2 months reading a manual and guides. Are there tutorial missions, for example?

Love the pictures.

Down to the point, click and shoot thing if thats your thing, and all the way up to hard core realistic. If you play IL2 I don't see the problem in learning how to play this one, it isn't any more complicated than Il2. ;)

Wonderfull shots Major. Here are some of mine I already posted (totaly unedited)...

If you've played SH3 then you'll be right at home with it. The Trigger Maru mod makes all the key commands the same as SH3. I find manual targeting much easier with SH4 than it was in SH3, mostly because the US boats had better targeting gizmo's. There are tutorials but I didn't use them, I was pretty comfortable with the way things worked after a few hours of play. There's a good thread I'll dig up with the few basic steps you have to do to get a firing solution. EDIT - post no7 in this thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118522) is a very good step-by-step guide to manual targeting.

Be warned though - if you don't like Sub sims you won't like this. It's not an action game and it requires quite a bit of patience. It is a historical sim and so you can have 'boring' bits, though the time compression does go up to 8000 and something.

Right then, buy it I shall. Cheers for the link.

Is the Yamato modelled?

Is the Yamato modelled?

Take a look at the second pic from above.

I just see a sub in all your pics, Thor.

03-08-2007, 17:09
By the way I meant to add something important. SH4 has a multiplayer mode that allows one of the players to control the escorts using external views. I haven't tried it yet but I will experiment and report back. There's a mission editor included too which I haven't looked at yet. I loved Destroyer Command despite it's horrible bugginess, I'm sort of hoping this will do what Destroyer Commander/SH2 was meant to be about.

I meant 1st post in this thread. Should have been more specific...

I'm realy interested in that MP mode Major, maybe we can give it a try. Right now I'm searching for another GB of ram, because playing this game on 1 GB is torture...

03-08-2007, 18:26
yes, Yamato (infact Yamatos :D) are modelled in this game :)

WOW!!!! I love sub games, at least I did, I havent played a good sim since the Amiga one I had or it may have been an early PC game. This looks well nice, can it be played online?

03-08-2007, 19:08
Yeah it can be played multiplayer, there's a lobby system at Ubi. There are 2 different modes co-op and adversarial. Co-op mode is self explanatory - everyone against the AI escorts. Adversarial mode lets the host control all the escorts, whillst the clients attack in subs. I just tried it out on LAN at home and couldn't get the adversarial mode to work - caused a CTD on both machines :( . Co op mode worked ok though.

You need a reasonably decent rig to run it - 2Gb of RAM is highly recommended.

great screenshots thanks, i really need a new pc to play this. (my machine runs sh3 ok i suppose, some frames dropped during big explosions etc, 2.4gig P4 socket 478, 1.5gig ram (ddr 2700), radeon 9550 run at AGP4x, ASUS P4PE board ,no pci-express, not even AGP8x. Its years old basically, im pleased its still going at all)

those screens really do look photoshopped, gobsmacking indeed, something a bit oil painting like about them (in a digital sort of way, probably)

what res are you running it at? (what sort of machine would i need to get a similar effect?, is a really serious graphics card required?)

I don't know if a really serious card is required as such, but obviously it helps. The shots are an 8800 GTX running at 1280x1024 with 16x AA and all the graphics settings maxed out. I wouldn't like to say how well it would run on your system, but there should be plenty of room to pull back the settings I would think. Also framerate isn't quite as important as a flight sim say, so the odd bit of slowdown probably won't ruin your experience.

04-08-2007, 15:32
The card here isn't such a big issue. I can run it on my 7600GT on full settings and LCD naitive rez. (no AA tho), RAM is what you need, and 2 Gigs of it.

04-08-2007, 16:05

The min amount is 1 gig of ram but you will definately need 2 gig to play. Myself and a few other fellow 334th members have started playing and its awesome playing when you get 5-8 players online.

If you do not like 30 or more controls for a game I recommend you do not get. There are alot of controls to this game and like said above you need alot of patience. And agreed that since the new patch came out the game is alot more fun to play.

very nice screens m8 another game i will buy when new pc gets upgraded ;)

06-08-2007, 17:34
Wow, looks great! I don't think my computer will run it although I do have 2GB RAM.

06-08-2007, 19:34
sssshhhhhinyyyy eh mate?

*note to myself: buy new pc*

06-08-2007, 20:21
thx for the nice screenshots..

sure looks very good.

this might interest the navy guys..

06-08-2007, 21:36
Yeah Happy, I've been following that game's development for about 3 years. Nice to see they've got a new site - looks like it's not going to end up as vapourware then :)

Well much of what I've read in the last year about PT Boats: Knights of the Sea has been somewhat negative. The latest info can be found here (http://www.simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2254933&page=4&fpart=4#Post2259681). It sounds as if it will be a hashed job like Whirlwind over Vietnam.
PT Boats Knights of the Sea - Don't get your hopes up. I know there have been a lot of simmers waiting for this game, but I have always suspected that this title was in trouble and know I know. How do I? Welll....let me rewind.

1C and Akella where there, which was nice to see (Oleg was not as far as I know) but they hired some real jerky American guys to display their wares. I grabbed a catalog of their titles and tried to talk to the crew about PT Boats, Storm of War BOB (which was not displayed or in the 2007 catalog) and some others, but the guy was a real ass and copped a total attitude with me.

Maybe because I asked some pointed questions about PT Boats and the long development cycle. He basically told me that we will be lucky to see it at all and that is has been dumbed down and it's scope limited. He said there were problems in development and things have changed. So, expect an arcade version of PT Boats when it releases.

06-08-2007, 23:31
Oh man I hadn't heard that, that's really depressing. There's nothing I hate more than arcade dumbing-down of ww2 sims (or anything historical or 'real'for that matter). The games compaines just seem to think it's another genre like Star Wars. Actually that's not true, they'll take Star Wars far more seriously because they'll get loads of complaints if they get it wrong  .

I've just bought this, because it's now only 4.99 in PC World.

Version 1.3 as standard.

There is an auto-update feature, which downloads stuff but doesn't install it.

Mind you, I'm running Windows 7 - 64bit so maybe it's just my system.

Anyone else still playing this?

22-03-2010, 17:35
Yup, I am playing.

Supermods: RFB 2.0 + RSRDC v575.

The latest patch brings the game to v1.4, but I highly recommend that you get the U-Boat add-on, which brings the game to v1.5. All super mods are now based (and have been for some time) on the v1.5.

The game has many super mods, from U-Boat conversion, to the capital ship simulator. But probably the two best mods are Trigger Maru v1.9 and Real Fleet Boat v2.0. It is your pick. :)

For a small donation to SubSim you can now play with the proper Narwhal class V boat: LINK (http://www.subsim.com/mods1/keltos/narwhal_mar2010.php)
