    180-200 max to spend on a gpu

    My old gpu has died, it was a very capable 4870x2 even Clod was playable and it ate RoF and IL2 for breakfast. I want a card that can run Clod at decent settings and so should play Il2 and RoF maxed.

    Looking at new:

    GTX480 = 180
    7850 = 180
    6950 = 180

    or second hand:
    GTX570/6970 etc

    What do the techno geeks recommend??

    7850 or 7870 if fits the budget.

    - GTX 480 you should stay away from (hot and super loud), and GTX 570 (stock) has inadequate power regulation
    - 7000 series from AMD is much better than the previous, 6000 series

    I almost bought a 7850 at lunch, then overclockers tried to add 9 for delivery and I thought nah, most places do free delivery on stuff over 100. I`m looking at unlocked 6950`s on fleabay at the minute but my last ebay card lasted 15 months so i`m a bit wary. If I`m honest the 480 was the top line card 2 years ago, still scores well in the charts and I don`t care about heat or noise as I`m cold blooded and deaf, so they still tickle my fancy and Nvidia always supported the drivers and Il2 better than AMD. So I`m hanging in there looking, nothing jumps out and cries buy me atm although the 7850 nearly did, I figured when they dropped to 120 I`d buy a second and crossfire them, the 2x 5850 combo always did surprisingly well against real top line cards so maybe 2x 7850 would do likewise.

    I agree. 2X7850's would be pretty awesome mate.

    Just the one is fine....for now, that is.

    I would say go for the HD7850 overal as they are incredibly fast gladly.

    As i will be getting the 7850/7870 when i can afford to do so.

    Bought a HIS 7870 IceQ, cost a lot of money but it should last a good couple of years and I haven`t bought a decent new card for years. Hope it lives up to the reviews!!!!!.

    It looks like it covers across to the next PCIe slot, I hope not. Might be time to get a new board , mine is SATA 2 and PCIe 2, I`ve got a SATA 3 SSD and this cards PCIe 3.0, reckon it`ll be a noticeable difference upgrading the board??

    Looks to me like a normal 2 slot card. Then again, 3 slots aren't a stretch nowadays any more.

    No real benefit from PCI 3.0 as of yet (and some years I guess), but with SSD and SATA 3 (6 GB/s) you should feel the difference.

    Good Choice on the Card Smurfy, i just got a new one my self a month ago as my old system died.

    PCIe 2.0 is more than fast enough for your PCIe 3.0 card, AMD them selfs dont even bother yet with PCIe 3.0 motherboards.

    SATA 6Gb with a SATA 6Gb SSD does make a good difrence though.

    It`s good , it`s quiet and cool (wasn`t too bothered about those factors tbh but some will be), I upped all the settings, enabled the grass and CloD flying online averaged 70+fps. It seems that the higher the resolution the worse CloD gets, I had it at 1280 X 1024?, my eyes like that and so did the card. The definition is superb compared to my old 4870x2 and the colours seem more vibrant. It`s a shame that I don`t do FP shooters so I can`t give any better review than using CloD, but it`s a good card, uses hardly any power and doesn`t get hot or noisy, suits me.

    Ps THOR it covers 2 and a bit of the adjacent slots, but doesn`t obstruct the second PCIe graphics card slot.

    PPS!! I had the gpu clocks set at 1100mhz for the gpu and 5000mhz for the memory.

    Spent an hour on the ATAG server last night, flying over land takes about 15 fps off the total, had a dogfight near the ships with 2 or 3 other planes, never bothered the card at all. During that fight the card sat at 49deg and gpu usage was 70%. I`ll post what my game settings are when I get chance, but most of the time I was getting 80fps, high up it was 100 and on the deck near land 50-60.

    Excellent. That card is roughly performance wise on level with my GTX 580. Only you got more VRAM. Do try ROF maxed out.

    Looked at the stats from the MSI afterburner program, online in ATAG server playing CloD, max gpu usage was 79%, max gpu mem usage was 1.4gb, max temp 50degC and it ran with VSynch enabled at 60fps without ever dropping more than 2 or 4 fps below that. Well pleased with the card.

    I maxed out RoF including all the bells and whistles and 15 light sources and that did tax the card a bit, stayed steady at around 35fps but never got hot.

    For me, the supersampling kills the FPS, everything else I can run on max. Over at a local forum, a guy had a GTX 580 Lightning with 3 GB VRAM - although with supersampling the game used massive 2.4 GB or VRAM, his FPS wasn't any better than mine. It just the 580 doesn't have the horsepower to max out ROF 100%.

    You should be able to run all 20 light sources IMHO. This last 7000 series is excellent overall, from power efficiency to loudness and thermals. They more or less botched it with 6000 series.

    Would enable the use of supersampling with everything else maxed out. Tried and tested with 2 x 580s.
