Lightbulb DBS Mission #7 - discussion

With the popularity and rarity of PTO missions, it has been decided (well I have ) that we will run our MDS Coral Sea next.

The map is in final polishing stages and almost ready to launch. There will be some changes in comparison with MDS Midway:

    • No more AI recon planes. All recon flights will be human and limited to 4 pilots in the air at the same time with 8 available planes in total.
    • Radar or FoW has been decreased. From 5 grids radius on Midway, it will now track aircraft at 2.5 grids radius, and not below 50m. Small ships will have simulated visual radius of 1 grid and no altitude limitation.
    • Up until now an honor based rule, death penalties will be enforced. If you die, you will have to sit out before being given permission to refly. Currently suggested penalty duration is 10 minutes*.
    • Home base icons (carriers) will remain static throughout the Mission, further preventing the one team to locate the other.
    • A/C type will no longer be visible on the scoring screen.

*Because of longer flying distances than on Midway.

Unlike Midway where we had to use AI bomber flights on blue side to simulate vast number of flights and overall attack on Midway Atoll, there will be no AI bomber flights here. We do have a mission version with AI flights as a backup if all else fails and there aren't enough pilots to populate both teams (bomber slots) but that will be a last resort. Since this will be primarily a human pilots oriented mission, carrier AAA effectiveness has also been increased. During our latest testing we found that the IJN carriers with the same settings spit out at best 1/2 or 1/3 of the fire of what USN carriers are capable of. Thus we might increase them even more to balance it out.

Now for the date. My suggestion is to run this on 31st of this month, again Saturday. In the same time frame we ran Midway. Reason being this will enable US guys to join in again and Europen guys to stay up late and not worry about working tomorrow and lack of sleep (wife permitting though). Another reason being our participation on SEOW MTO Multisektor, phase 2. Both =VARP= and JG/77 guys fly the same campaign. If we were to run this on Sunday it would have to be earlier than SEOW and our usual get together, not to mention way too early for US guys.

Nothing is fixed in stone and we are open for suggestions. Fire away.

EDIT: Notified =VARP=, JG/77, AG-51 and 4thFG about this thread. Pass it along to those you know might be interested.

There are certain requirements that have to be met before we run a mission:

    • map needs to be tested and small quirks ironed out
    • two weeks of advertising before the event to fill the roster as much as possible
    • double checking that no social life or other events / campaigns interfere with the selected date

Or in other words I have a birthday that I have to attend this Saturday and map isn't final yet (should be after this Sunday).

That being said, if all goes well this Sunday we can run it two weeks after on Saturday 24th.

As for the 5 vs. 10 minute penalty rule. 10 is a bit much I agree. But with the longer flight times if someone engages the bombers ahead of the fleet with a 5 minute penalty there is still time to re-fly and re engage them. Thats why I suggested 10. If the majority wishes so, it will be lowered to 5 minutes. Absolutely no problem.

Do we really have to "balance out" the ships AA? Wildcat and TBD are already at a disadvantage vs. Kate and Zeke.

    Just thinking...I'm in anyway.

We flew next to Shokaku with 3 TBDs in close formation and got home with a scratch. Did the same with 5 B5Ns next to the Yorktown and got mauled. Needs more testing but we've only increased Japanese carriers from ROF 3 to ROF 2.

Might be that the Yorktown has better AAA than the stock carriers...

EDIT: What about a penalty of 7 minutes. Would this compromise suite everyone?

I like it. I need to be carefull to my virtual life. It is not always about shooting dozens planes. Flying alone against 4 planes is not good idea. It is better turn and get out. Saving plane from situation which seems without chance to me is good option too. If it is possible get out of there of course, hehe. And flying to carrier with Beacon help is always fun.

If AAA is strong it is needed drop ordnance from greater distance (alt or range). Anyway there will be a online test so it can be easily tested.

If all goes well with the map this Sunday and no one objects, we can start a sign up thread on Monday for Saturday 24th. I am waiting for more feedback before settling on the date.

barring any other FUBAR unforeseeable in the future, I'd love to finally join y'all in one of these. I think the "penalty" for getting shot down is fine, be it 5 minutes or 10 minutes to refly, either way, it's shorter than "dead is DEAD!"

beyond that, I'm a fan of the time and day the last one was on. Waking up early morning on Saturday (I'm PST-7) to enjoy coffee before I take off sounds like a great time! Saturdays, as a whole, are a great day for me.

I wouldn't want to miss this one! I'm OK with the time and the date. Of course there's always the unpredictable. I might not have enough time for training and testing but i'll try to attend as much as possible. Personally i don't care if the break is 5 or 10 mins, But 10 might sound a lot to some.

Well, if I get shot down or whatever 4 times again this next scenario and it's 10 minutes each... my short attention span ... now what was I going to say??

Mmm, 5mins for bombers and 7mins for fighters But this limitation cant be done with game itself I think.

I support 10 minutes. As a defending fighter you still have the option to fly less dangerous attacks. The job of attacking bombers does not necesseraly become easier with a 10 minute penelaty, because their escorts might behave more cautiously too.

I think after all it will result in a more realistic experience.
